Every week in Central Florida, 5 people are killed and another 35 people are seriously injured in traffic crashes on our roads. We know how to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes that result in death or severe injury. The harder question is how to get the public to care, understand, and change what they do. History shows it can be done. Seat belt use and smoking rates didn’t shift because of a single ad. They shifted because messages were clear, human, and repeated over years. Road safety deserves the same approach, and public information officers and the media are the people who can deliver it.
In this practical session, Kevin Elliott of Applied Research Associates shows how to explain the Safe System Approach and transportation safety to people who don’t speak “engineer.” You’ll leave with ideas you can use in your next news release, interview, social media post, or public meeting.
