Safety Resources

In any job you undertake, it’s important to have the right tools. So, when you set out to help spread the word about how to make Central Florida safer, you want materials that appeal to all ages. We have those, and we are happy to share.

Or, maybe you are part of a neighborhood or organization that would like to host a presentation from one of our transportation safety experts. You can use our Request a Speaker form to ask us to bring the resources to you.

TAKE A MOMENT TO WATCH — AND SHARE

We have a variety of videos that bring home the safety message – from inspirational to instructive. You can see them all on the Vision Zero Central Florida playlists on our YouTube channel. A popular feature you can share is the Safety Moment, where members of our planning staff offers insights on timely safety topics in short messages that are ideal for sharing.

RESOURCES FOR YOUTH

You’re never too young to start learning about road safety. That’s why MetroPlan Orlando has created some resources, especially for students.

A definite favorite at our outreach events is our original activity book, Path to Safety Central Florida, aimed at elementary students. The lessons and activities will appeal to kids of all ages. It’s packed with math and word puzzles, vocabulary builders, coloring pages, and more to reinforce Vision Zero safety principles.

We offer the same content in Spanish in the companion book, Camino a la Seguridad en las Vias de Florida Central.

Both books are available digitally or in print. If you would like some printed copies for your family, scout troop, community event, classroom activity, etc., please contact: Mary Ann Horne, MaryAnn.Horne@MetroPlanOrlando.gov for more information.

Another popular resource for young people is our interactive safety quiz, Get Ready. Get Set. Get to ZERO, which is designed for middle school and high school students. The quiz uses math and science to help future and beginning drivers learn about some real-world consequences of driver behavior. Participants get immediate feedback as they answer five questions about safety. Even experienced drivers have told us they learned something when they went through the questions.

Take the quiz yourself at the link above, and please share it with young drivers and would-be drivers that you know!

SPECIAL RESOURCE FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS

Elected officials, at all levels of government, make important decisions related to safety. They also can serve as champions and sources of safety-related information.

These elected leaders influence how our communities evolve and implement safety strategies when they approve community budgets, authorize land uses, and implement transportation plans.

While all the information in our Safety section can be helpful to these leaders, we created a separate guide that points to some things they can do in their unique roles. The guide for elected officials includes information on why we need Vision Zero, ideas on how to boost safety messages, and a glossary of safety terms and concepts that are often used in local government documents and presentations.

SPECIAL RESOURCES FOR OLDER ADULTS

Safety is a lifelong pursuit, and the Florida Department of Transportation administers a program called Safe Mobility for Life in partnership with Florida State University and several public agencies across the state.

The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition offers information for older adults and their families about making safe transportation choices. This includes a series of free CarFit events across the state that helps older drivers improve their vehicles to enhance safety and comfort. There are also safe driving tips, assessments that help older drivers decide when to give up the keys, and information on how to get around when you are no longer driving.
