Regional Leaders Join Forces to Address Micromobility Safety Across Central Florida

Local government, law enforcement, education, transportation, health and safety leaders from across Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties came together Thursday for the first Central Florida Micromobility Safety Initiative Regional Roundtable, convened by MetroPlan Orlando to address growing safety challenges involving e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices.

The initiative is led by MetroPlan Orlando Board Chair Commissioner Nicole H. Wilson, Vice Chair Commissioner Viviana Janer and Secretary-Treasurer Commissioner Bob Dallari. The MetroPlan Orlando Board launched the regional effort following growing concerns about micromobility safety and the need for greater coordination among communities throughout Central Florida.

More than 80 people attended the roundtable in person and virtually, demonstrating significant interest in the issue. The stakeholder discussion included representatives from 20 organizations spanning local government, law enforcement, education, transportation, health and safety, and other sectors. The roundtable also benefited from virtual participation and input from representatives in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and St. Johns counties, who shared perspectives from communities addressing similar issues elsewhere in Florida.

During the roundtable, participants shared what they are experiencing in their communities, actions already underway or being considered, and challenges involving education, enforcement, infrastructure, data and policy. The discussion also highlighted opportunities to learn from approaches already being implemented across the region and identify practices that could benefit other communities.

“These issues don’t stop at county lines,” said MetroPlan Orlando Board Chair Commissioner Nicole H. Wilson. “Our goal is to listen carefully, speak candidly and develop a clear understanding of what our regional framework needs to address.”

The roundtable is the first step in an ongoing regional process. MetroPlan Orlando will work with the initiative’s leadership team and regional partners to organize the issues and opportunities identified during the discussion, establish focused workgroups where appropriate, and identify near-term policy considerations that may warrant attention ahead of the 2027 legislative session.

The Vision Zero Task Force will also serve as a resource to the initiative, providing technical expertise and insight as the work progresses.
