MetroPlan Orlando Partners with Osceola Schools, Sheriff on E-bike/Scooter Safety
Posted on: March 30, 2026 in Safety
MetroPlan Orlando is helping launch a pilot e-bike education program for middle and high school students in the Celebration community, as part of our Vision Zero safety initiative.
The pilot program for middle and high school students is being offered free in partnership with the School District of Osceola County, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, and the American Bicycling Education Association (ABEA). Approximately 160 students in Celebration High School and Celebration K-8 are expected to benefit from in-person e-bike safety training, across four weekly sessions, which began March 25.
An Increasing Concern
Use of e-bikes has increased in Central Florida, along with incidents of crashes among young riders. This has highlighted the need for education on traffic laws, safe riding practices, and equipment awareness.
Training sessions for about 40 students will be facilitated by deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, who will serve as on-site mentors, supplementing an online curriculum from the ABEA. Mighk Wilson, Senior Transportation Planner at MetroPlan Orlando, is leading the regional effort.
The pilot is part of a broader MetroPlan Orlando initiative to evaluate the effectiveness of e-bike safety education in school settings across Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. Pre- and Post-program surveys will be administered to participating students and faculty to assess knowledge gained and attitude changes. This feedback will inform future efforts.
