Plans and Resources

As part of our mission to advance safety in Central Florida, we offer connections to a variety of resources. Some of these were developed by MetroPlan Orlando, while others originated with our partners at the regional, state, or national level. These include local action plans, federal and state safety information, and more.

SAFETY IN ACTION

MetroPlan Orlando and our partners are taking a collaborative approach to safety. All communities in the region have adopted Safety Action Plans to guide their work at the local and regional level. Take a look at what these local governments are doing on the Safety Partners Page.

MetroPlan Orlando is committed to eliminating deaths and serious injuries on roads in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties by 2050, through a proactive, data-informed, and community-based approach.

Central Florida is the only place in the nation where a regional organization has worked alongside every county and city government in the area to coordinate safety planning on this scale. The regional plan, plus county and city Safety Action Plans, were funded through a $3.79 million Safe Streets and Roads for All grant from the Federal Highway Administration, which we received in 2023.

MetroPlan Orlando has been notified that we received a second Safe Streets and Roads for All federal grant to continue our Vision Zero Central Florida work. The $2.12 million grant will be used to update the Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, as needed, continue safety-focused education and community outreach, and conduct safety road audits. Work is expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.

METROPLAN ORLANDO: REGIONAL PLAN

This Vision Zero Safety Action Plan for Central Florida is the culmination of a year-long effort which analyzed crash data, identified high injury networks, and pinpointed needed safety projects. Adopted by the MetroPlan Orlando Board on September 11, 2024, the plan includes prioritized safety improvements and 34 regional actions to start the journey toward zero traffic deaths by the year 2050.

How We Will Follow the Plan

This Safety Action Plan can benefit everyone in Central Florida – especially the most vulnerable road users. We also support the companion plans developed by counties and cities, as well as the Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Safety Strategic Plan. Working together, these plans will help our region achieve the vision of safer, more accessible, and more convenient travel.

This Vision Zero Central Florida initiative results from a coordinated planning effort led by MetroPlan Orlando, in partnership with local governments and the Florida Department of Transportation.

VISION ZERO TASK FORCE

Our progress on safety, guided and monitored by the Vision Zero Central Florida Task Force, will allow the region to apply for grants in the future to fund safety projects such as planning phases, demonstration projects, and construction.

Getting to zero will take everybody. The Task Force draws on the knowledge and experience of many Central Floridians interested in safety — from government partners to community advocates. All task force meetings are open to the public, and recordings are archived on our YouTube Channel.

The Task Force meets virtually four times a year (January, March, July, and September). Information about upcoming meetings and archived materials from past meetings are available in our Calendar section. REGIONAL SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

The Vision Zero Safety Action Plan for Central Florida recognizes that infrastructure alone cannot solve the transportation safety crisis. It will take a combination of actions that trigger road modifications, road user behavior change, improved post-crash care, travel speed reductions, and safer vehicles.

High Injury Network

The High Injury Network is a collection of streets where a disproportionate number of crashes that result in someone being killed or severely injured (KSI) occur. This allows us to focus our efforts on the places where crashes are more likely to result in a KSI. The regional fact sheets linked below provide more information, with Spanish and Haitian Creole versions available.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WHERE YOU LIVE

No one entity can fix road safety problems alone. The Vision Zero Central Florida initiative results from a coordinated planning effort led by MetroPlan Orlando, in partnership with local governments and the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Central Florida Safety Strategic Plan is a state resource that focuses on safer street designs and changing behaviors. It prioritizes getting to zero deaths and serious injuries in the nine-counties of the department’s District 5.
