MetroPlan Orlando Board Approves 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan

The MetroPlan Orlando Board has approved a Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) for the region that stresses safety, multi-modal transportation options and a conservative fiscal approach. The plan covers the years through 2040 and identifies current and future needs based on projections for population and travel demand.
The LRTP for the year 2040 received unanimous approval at the board’s regular meeting on June 11, 2014 in Orlando. A public hearing for the plan was held on June 4, 2014.
In addition to safety, important elements of the 2040 Plan are highway construction, public transit, congestion management, bicycle and pedestrian projects, freight movement, and transportation funding resources.
The 2040 plan’s development included extensive community outreach, in which residents were given opportunities to talk about improvements they would like to see in the region’s transportation system. These public involvement efforts reached more than 2,400 residents directly, as well as offering information online and through social media.
The plan is updated every five years to reflect changing dynamics in the region. Projects in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties must be included in the Long Range Transportation Plan to receive federal funding.
Planning efforts for the 2040 LRTP began in 2012 and grew to include technical analysis, transportation modeling, public opinion research, advisory committee input, and broad public involvement. See the plan documents approved by the MetroPlan Orlando Board below.
